Mark 2: 23-28 & 3: 1-7

(10. Legalism denies your freedom to make your own decisions based on your personal experience with God.)

Mark 2

23     Jesus was passing through the grain fields on the Sabbath, and his disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain.

24     And the Pharisees were saying to Jesus, "See here, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"

25     And Jesus said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and became hungry, he and his companions;

26     How he entered into the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he gave it also to those who were with him?'

27      And Jesus added: "The Sabbath was made for the people and not the people for the Sabbath."

28      Therefore, the Son of Man is Sovereign even of the Sabbath.

Mark 3

1     Jesus entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there   with a withered hand.

2     And they were watching Jesus to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath in order that they might accuse him.

3     And Jesus said to the man with the withered hand, "Stand up and come to me."

4     And Jesus said to the crowd, "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?"  But they kept silent.

5     And after looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, Jesus said to the man, "Stretch out your hand."  And he stretched it out, and his hand was healed.

6     Then the Pharisees went out and immediately began to plot with the Herodians (political enemies of the Pharisees) against Jesus as to how they might destroy him.

7     And Jesus withdrew to the sea with his disciples; and a great multitude followed.

Author's Note: Jesus replaced an abusive and oppressive legalistic religious system with something better: HIMSELF!  Why have so many of the people who claim to follow Jesus spent their time and energy building again a legalistic judgmental religion that denies the life and teachings of Jesus and inflicts great pain and self hate upon multitudes of people today?

On to Galatians 5:1, 13-15
